How we put this guide together
We haven't bought or worn anything from Standún, so this isn't a hands-on review. Everything below comes from Standún's own site (standun.com) — its story page, delivery page, refund policy and six product pages — plus Standún's Trustpilot profile and the Trustpilot profiles of three other Irish knitwear shops, all read on September 25, 2026. There is no Standún discount code on this page because we don't have one to offer.
What Standún sells
Standún is a family-run shop in Spiddal, on the Connemara coast of County Galway, Ireland. According to its own story page, it was founded in 1946 by May Mulready and Máirtín Standún and is now run by their granddaughters; a second shop opened in Oughterard, Co. Galway in 2018. The shop says it was the first store in Ireland to export the Aran sweater to US department stores such as Nordstrom — that's the shop's own claim, which we couldn't check independently.
Online, it sells far more than sweaters: women's, men's and children's clothing, rainwear, jewellery, home decor, kitchenware, toys, books and Irish designer brands. The Aran knitwear it stocks comes from several makers, including Original Aran Co. and Aran Crafts, and the product pages we read mark those knits as made in Ireland. Some of its rainwear, such as the Tanta jackets, doesn't state a country of manufacture on the product page.
What it costs
There isn't one Standún price — it's a department-style shop. Examples from the product pages, as shown to a US visitor on Sep 25, 2026:
| Item | Maker | Material | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Children's Aran Sweater (Green) | Original Aran Co. | 100% merino wool | $35 |
| Traditional Aran Crew Neck Sweater (Denim) | Original Aran Co. | 100% merino wool | $76 |
| Men's 1/4 Zip Aran Sweater (Blackwatch) | Original Aran Co. | 100% merino wool | $94 |
| Aran Celtic Jacquard Half Zip Sweater (Oatmeal) | Aran Crafts | 100% wool, hand wash only | $105 |
| Tanta Hyou men's padded raincoat | Tanta Rainwear | Polyester with PU coating, 5000mm waterproof rating | $181 |
| Tanta Shuang men's rain jacket | Tanta Rainwear | Polyester with PU coating, 5000mm waterproof rating | $204 |
The site also accepts euro, pound sterling, Canadian and Australian dollars, so what you see depends on where you're browsing from. All six items above showed an "Add to cart" button in most sizes on the day we checked.
What buyers say
Standún's Trustpilot profile scored 4.6 out of 5 from 256 reviews on Sep 25, 2026, with about 5% one-star reviews. The profile is claimed by the company, and Trustpilot shows it has replied to every negative review. Reviewers mostly praise the quality of the knitwear, the packaging and the delivery speed.
The complaints that come up repeatedly are about customs: a few reviewers say a wrongly labelled customs form led to an unexpected duty bill, and that getting a refund was slow when they refused a parcel because of those charges. That's worth knowing before you order from outside the EU.
On the product pages themselves, review counts are small — the kids' sweater had 5 reviews, the men's quarter-zip 3, and the two Tanta jackets none at all — so there isn't much item-level feedback to lean on yet.
How it compares
Standún is one of several Irish shops that sell Aran knitwear online. Here's how four of them looked on Trustpilot on Sep 25, 2026:
| Standún | Aran Sweater Market | The Irish Store | Aran Woollen Mills | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Trustpilot score | 4.6 | 4.6 | 4.7 | 2.5 |
| Number of reviews | 256 | 57,217 | 15,518 | 27 |
| One-star share | about 5% | about 5% | about 4% | about 44% |
| Common complaints | Customs charges and labelling | Delivery delays, tariffs and border fees | Customs delays, sizing, returns for items that don't fit | Costly returns, pilling, sizing |
Standún's score matches the big specialist shops, but on a much smaller number of reviews. What sets it apart is that it's a single family shop with a long history in one Galway village, and that it sells a wide mix of Irish gifts alongside the sweaters. If you want the largest choice of Aran styles and the deepest review history, Aran Sweater Market and The Irish Store have far more of both.
Shipping, customs and returns
Standún ships with An Post and says in-stock items are handled in 1–2 business days. Its delivery page (read Sep 25, 2026) lists:
| Destination | Shipping cost | Free from | Delivery time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ireland | €4.99 | €60 | 4–5 working days |
| UK and Northern Ireland | £6 | £90 | 10–14 working days |
| USA | $20 | $150 | 1–2 weeks |
| Canada | $15 | $150 | 3–4 weeks |
Product pages show a simpler banner — "€15 worldwide or free over €150" — so check the figure at checkout.
For the US, the delivery page says duty and customs are included in the total at checkout. For the UK and Canada, we found no statement either way, and that's where the Trustpilot customs complaints matter: budget for possible import charges.
Returns: full-price items can be returned within 60 days of receipt, but sale items only within 14 days. Items must be unworn, with tags, in original packaging. You pay the return postage back to Spiddal, Ireland, and refunds go to your original payment method once the return is approved. Earrings, swimwear, personal care items and gift cards can't be returned. Standún offers exchanges by email or phone.
Who it suits
Standún is a good fit if you want an Aran sweater or an Irish gift labelled Made in Ireland, bought from a long-running family shop rather than a marketplace, and you're ordering to the US, where customs is included at checkout. It's a weaker fit if you're in the UK or Canada and don't want to risk import charges, if you're unsure of your size (you'd pay to post a return back to Ireland), or if you're shopping sales and want the full 60-day return window.
