How we put this guide together
On October 28, 2026 we went through the Mycoterra Farm online store: its product data and prices, the six product pages with their specs and customer reviews, the contact page, and the refund, shipping and terms pages. We put one Shiitake grow kit in the cart to see real shipping quotes for four US ZIP codes, then emptied the cart. We also read news coverage of the farm and searched for independent reviews. Nobody on our team has grown one of these kits yet, so this is a buyer's guide, not a hands-on test, and we do not give a star rating.
Who Mycoterra Farm is
Mycoterra Farm is a certified organic mushroom farm in South Deerfield, in Western Massachusetts. Its home page says it was founded in 2010 and is woman-owned. Local press reports that founder Julia Coffey started by growing oyster mushrooms in a basement in Westhampton around 2011 before moving the farm to South Deerfield. A Boston Globe feature from September 2026 says the farm now grows more than 2,000 pounds of certified organic mushrooms a week, and that shiitake makes up more than half of that.
Besides fresh mushrooms sold at farmers markets and local stores, the online shop sells mushroom grow kits, dried mushrooms, mushroom tinctures and plug spawn for growing mushrooms on logs. The six products below are the ones we were asked to cover.
The 6 products
1. Mycoterra Farm Shiitake Mushroom Grow Kit
Photo: Mycoterra Farm
A 5-pound block of shiitake mycelium on hardwood sawdust and wheat bran, with setup instructions. The store rates it Easy, says it likes cool rooms (50 to 70°F), and lists 1 to 2 weeks to the first harvest and a yield of 2 to 3 pounds. You need a plate, a plant mister and water. Price on October 28, 2026: $25. The product page shows 8 reviews, all five stars; one grower reports a first harvest on day 8. It suits first-time growers and anyone who cooks with shiitake. Drawback: it is a live product, so it cannot be returned unless it arrives damaged.
2. Mycoterra Farm Organic Lion's Mane Mushroom Grow Kit
Photo: Mycoterra Farm
A 5-pound block on hardwood sawdust and soy hulls. Lion's mane grows into a shaggy white mushroom that the store describes as having a subtle, seafood-like flavor and texture. The store rates it Intermediate, at 55 to 68°F, with 2 to 3 weeks to the first harvest and a 2 to 3 pound yield. Price on October 28, 2026: $25. The page shows 6 reviews, all five stars; one buyer sent kits to three sisters for the new year. It suits growers who want something you rarely find in a grocery store. Drawback: it is a little slower and less forgiving than the shiitake or oyster kits.
3. Mycoterra Farm Blue Oyster Mushroom Grow Kit
Photo: Mycoterra Farm
A 5-pound block on hardwood sawdust and soy hulls, rated Easy, for cool rooms of 55 to 65°F, with 1 to 2 weeks to the first harvest and a 2 to 3 pound yield. The store calls blue oysters fast-growing and good for beginners, with a mild, tender texture. Price on October 28, 2026: $25. The page shows 5 reviews, four at five stars and one at four. One buyer gave it as a holiday Yankee Swap gift and heard back that the recipient had beautiful oysters growing. It suits beginners and gift-givers. Drawback: oysters grow fast, so you need to check the block daily once it starts to pin.
4. Mycoterra Farm Certified Organic Dried Lion's Mane Mushrooms
Photo: Mycoterra Farm
Lion's mane grown on the farm, harvested in small batches and dried slowly at low temperature. The store says it tastes earthy with a mild, nutty sweetness and that 1 ounce rehydrates to 6 to 8 ounces after a 20-minute soak in hot water. Suggested uses: tea, broths, stir-fries, soups and scrambled eggs. Price on October 28, 2026: $10 for 1 ounce or $25 for 4 ounces. The page shows 4 reviews, all five stars. It suits cooks who want lion's mane without growing it. Drawback: you need to rehydrate it before cooking.
5. Mycoterra Farm Organic Lion's Mane Mushroom Tincture 2oz
Photo: Mycoterra Farm
A 2-ounce liquid extract made from the fruiting body of certified organic lion's mane (Hericium erinaceus). The store says it uses a triple extraction process. The product page carries the standard note that its statements have not been evaluated by the FDA and that the product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Price on October 28, 2026: $29.95, with an option for recurring delivery. The page shows 4 reviews, all five stars; several reviewers add it to their morning coffee. It suits people who already use mushroom extracts and want an organic, farm-made one. Drawback: it is a supplement, so check with your doctor first if you are pregnant, nursing or take medication.
6. Mycoterra Farm Organic Mega Blend Mushroom Tincture 2oz
Photo: Mycoterra Farm
A 2-ounce liquid extract with eight species in one bottle: chaga, cordyceps (C. militaris), lion's mane, maitake, native reishi (Ganoderma tsugae), reishi (G. lucidum), shiitake and turkey tail. The page carries the same FDA note. Price on October 28, 2026: $29.95. The page shows 4 reviews, three at five stars and one at four; one reviewer says she chose it to buy straight from a farm rather than a trendy mushroom coffee brand. It suits people who want several mushrooms in one product. Drawback: the store does not list how much of each species is in the blend.

Shipping is extra below $150; the store's banner offers free shipping on orders over $150. With one $25 Shiitake kit in the cart on October 28, 2026, the cheapest option (USPS Ground Advantage) was $8.19 to Massachusetts (2 days), $8.39 to New York (2 days), $9.78 to Chicago (3 days) and $13.30 to Los Angeles (5 days). Four kits to Los Angeles cost $39.98 by UPS Ground Saver, so if you buy several kits it can be worth adding items to reach $150.
What buyers say
The store's home page shows 82 reviews. On the kit pages, growers mention fast results (pins within days, a first harvest on day 8, two flushes in under two weeks), clear instructions and good packing. One buyer had a package go missing in transit and says the farm sorted it out quickly. Outside the store we found only a small number of Yelp ratings (about three, averaging 4.5 stars) and local press coverage, not independent product reviews. Treat the review numbers as the seller's own figures.
How it compares
- Grocery store mushrooms: no waiting and no setup, but you buy them every time. A kit gives you a few pounds of fresh mushrooms and something to watch grow.
- Mass-market grow kits: easy to find online. Mycoterra Farm's kits come from a certified organic farm that grows mushrooms at scale, with clear specs for temperature, timing and yield.
- Mycoterra Farm: $25 per 5-pound block plus about $8 to $13 shipping, organic, with dried mushrooms and tinctures from the same farm.
Delivery & returns
The store says most orders ship within 2 to 3 business days, but grow kits are live items and may be held a little longer so they travel in good condition. In our cart test, delivery took 2 to 5 days depending on distance.
The refund policy gives you 14 days after delivery to request a return, for unused items in their original packaging, and you must email info@mycoterrafarm.com before sending anything back. Perishable goods such as mushroom growing kits cannot be returned unless they arrive damaged, defective or wrong, so inspect your box on arrival and contact the farm right away if something is off. Sale items cannot be returned. Approved refunds go back to your original payment method within 10 business days.
Who it suits / who should skip
Good fit: home cooks who want fresh organic mushrooms, beginners looking for an easy indoor growing project for the cold months, gift-givers who want something unusual, and people who like buying straight from a small farm.
Skip it if: your home is often warmer than about 70°F, you want a product you can return for any reason, you live outside the US, or you are looking for a supplement with proven health effects.
